12 days of 5ks

This December look out the running shoes and join us for our 12 days of 5ks virtual challenge!

The challenge is to walk, jog or run 5km a day for 12 days across December and raise funds for children with life-shortening conditions and their families across Scotland. You can take part wherever you are - this is your challenge, your way.

To take part, join our dedicated Facebook group - you’ll be able to connect with other supporters throughout the challenge, share your progress and access helpful fundraising tips.

You can then register for your FREE CHAS Santa hat and set up your Facebook fundraiser from within the group.

We’ve tried to answer as many questions you may have below, but if we’ve missed any, please don’t hesitate to email us on teamCHAS@chas.org.uk.

When should I take on the 12 days of 5ks?

We expect most people will begin the challenge on 1 December but as long as it's in December, it's really up to you when you start. Walk, jog or run 5km a total of 12 times across any days in December, you can do it on consecutive days to up the challenge difficulty if you like! We're delighted to have you fundraising for us and hope that you're inspired to take on something challenging to yourself.

Do I have to complete the 5km each day?

While the goal is to complete 5km each day for 12 days, it is up to you how you take on this challenge. We know December is a busy month, so might want to do longer distances on a couple of days to make up the overall distance of 60km - that's okay too!

How do I keep track of how far I’ve run?

You can use an app on your phone such as Strava, then write down how many kilometres you have done at the end of each day on the paper tracker in your fundraising pack. Don’t forget to post your progress in the Facebook group too and let everyone know how you’re doing!

We've also set up a Club for Strava users!

How do I prove that I have completed the 12 days of 5ks?

As part of this challenge, you will be asked to set up a 12 Days of 5ks Facebook fundraiser for CHAS where you can post your distances and update your supporters. These pages are linked to CHAS and we'll be able to see your progress!

How do I set up my 12 Days of 5ks fundraising page?

You can set up your fundraiser as part of the registration process using this link. Your banner and title will be set up for you, but feel free to personalise your fundraiser in the 'About' section.

Can I do more than 5km a day?

Yes! You can make your target whatever you want – you can make the challenge as hard as you like!

How do I register for my FREE Santa hat and fundraising pack?

You’ll find all the details in the Facebook group. If you’re not on Facebook don’t worry, email us on teamCHAS@chas.org.uk and we’ll help you out!

When will my CHAS Santa hat arrive?

We will be posting out packs in batches throughout November. We will get yours to you as soon as we can!

Will I receive a medal for taking part in the event?

All participants will receive a CHAS Santa hat when they sign up for the event. There is no minimum fundraising amount but we ask that you try to raise as much vital funds as possible for CHAS. Anyone who raises over £100 will receive a medal after the event.

Do I have to set up a Facebook fundraiser?

Facebook fundraisers are the easiest way for you to fundraise. The funds raised are sent directly to the CHAS bank account.

Alternatively, you can set up a page on JustGiving, please email us at teamCHAS@chas.org.uk for a link.

A sponsor sheet will also be included in your welcome pack for anyone who collects cash donations.

A friend accidentally donated to my Facebook fundraiser. Can you give them a refund?

Unfortunately we can’t issue refunds through Facebook but people can request a refund themselves from Facebook by following the below steps:

Send them this link: https://www.facebook.com/help/contact/162031714239823

  • Select - I donated to a fundraiser on Facebook
  • Select - I want a refund for my donation(s)
  • Select - I made a donation by accident and request the refund.

My friend who is not on Facebook would like to donate – how can they do this?

There are two options for them to support your fundraiser:

  • They can give you the cash or transfer you the funds (via PayPal, Online Banking etc) and you can add the donation to your fundraiser yourself.
  • They can donate directly to CHAS via https://www.chas.org.uk/donate - if they do this please ask them to put your name and "12 days of 5ks" in the message box so funds can be allocated correctly.

I requested a sponsor sheet – how do I send in the funds raised from this?

If you have raised money via a sponsor sheet then you can:

I want to complete the challenge as a team – how do I do this?

To do this Facebook suggests you can add up to three friends to be organisers of your fundraiser to help you manage it and rally more supporters to reach your fundraising goals.

First create your Fundraiser on Facebook and then you can add organisers by clicking the three dots next to the "share" button.

You can also set up a team in JustGiving. Once one person has created their fundraiser, they can click 'Create a Team' and invite team members to join. Please email us for the JustGiving link to set up your fundraiser at teamCHAS@chas.org.uk.
