Why Leave a gift in your will?
Gifts in Wills pay for the care given to one in every four children our fundraising supports. Quite simply, we couldn’t do what we do without the generosity of people who leave a gift to CHAS in their Will.
Just 1% of your estate would make such a huge difference to the lives of children with life-shortening conditions in Scotland, and their families.

Everyone should have a Will.
A Will is the only way to ensure that your wishes are carried out when you are no longer around. Without a will your estate will be divided up in line with the rules of intestacy. This means that you have little or no control over who receives what from your estate.
When should I create or update my will?
- When you have an unmarried partner who should inherit from your estate.
- When you get married, and your current will is invalidated (in England and Wales) or doesn't include your new spouse (in Scotland).
- When you have a child and want to appoint a guardian.
- When you buy a property or receive a large windfall.
- If you get divorced - your previous will won't automatically be invalidated.
- When you want to make provisions for step-children, foster children or dependents including pets.
- If your spouse passes away, and your previous will left the estate to them.
- For most people creating a will or updating one is straightforward. Doing it with a solicitor provides peace of mind that your will is valid.

How do I leave a gift in my Will?
Leaving a gift in your will isn’t as complicated as it sounds. We’ll take you through what you need to do below but if in doubt contact our dedicated Legacy team or your solicitor.
Value your estate and consider inheritance tax
It is a good idea to work out how much your assets are worth, including property, investments etc. When you make a Will there is information available at GOV.UK to make sure that you don’t pay any more inheritance tax than you should.
Consider what you would like to leave in your Will
There are different types of gifts you can leave in your Will, you can leave a specific amount, an item you own or you can leave a share of your estate. Share of estate gifts are very popular as this type of gift won’t lose its value over time.
Who will be included in your Will?
Think about who you would like to be included in your Will. You may wish to consider your close family and friends first. Once you have taken care of your loved ones you may consider leaving a gift to your chosen charity, like Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS).
Choose your executor
Your executors will be responsible for ensuring your wishes are met; you can appoint anyone as your executor. This can be a professional like a solicitor or you can choose a friend or relative. We would recommend you speak with them first so they are aware of your plans.
Contact your solicitor
